New Ad Space Listed on Online Dating Advertising

(Online Dating Industry Journal) A new ad package has been added to the Online Dating Advertising Website. The package, called ODM05, includes ads on five online dating sites, including the skyscraper (120X600) space on Online Dating Magazine.

Online Dating Advertising is a Website that lists advertising space available for online dating services or companies trying to reach online daters.

Online Dating Advertising Site Revamped

(Online Dating Industry Journal) The Online Dating Advertising Website has been completely revamped, redesigned, and upgraded in order to effectively help online dating companies find great advertising venues. The site was also upgraded to include advertising tips, industry news, advertising news, and twice as much overall information as before. The navigation of the site has been streamlined in order to make it easier for visitors to find what they're looking for.

Online Dating Advertising was launched in March as part of the Online Dating Magazine Network. The site helps connect advertisers with ad venues and online dating publishers with a place to advertise their available ad space. There is also a place for online dating directory owners to get their directory listed, along with links to their Submit page and Advertising page.

The recent revamp was in response to recommendations made by visitors and a desire to improve the quality of information and presentation.

Advertising Spending by Online Dating Services

(Online Dating Industry Journal) According to Nielsen, spending on advertising by online dating services continues to grow. Nielsen says that between January and October 2007 there was a 9% increase in spending over the same time period the previous year. Spending reached $379.6 million with the leading spending category being online. from January to October 2007, online dating services spent $134 million on Internet advertising followed by $107.2 million on cable television and $22.9 million on network television.

“Since most dating services are virtual businesses, it makes sense that they work to attract customers in the same space they operate, which is online,” said Brian Lane, senior vice president, Client Strategy & Product Management, Nielsen Monitor-Plus.  “While traditionally dating services have advertised heavily on network TV and national cable TV, we increasingly see more dating services leveraging national magazines to place their advertising dollars.”

Online dating service Match.com spent the most money of any dating services - $145.5 million. A distant second was eHarmony, which spent $88.1 million. No other services spent more than $32 million in advertising, according to the report.

Match.com nearly doubled its advertising spending in 2007 while eHarmony cut its spending by 16%.

The original report by Nielsen was released in February.

Joe's Comments
There's a reason that Match.com is the number one used online dating service while eHarmony is the number one used relationship service. They are very careful in their branding and message. Need a place too spend your advertising dollars? http://www.onlinedatingadvertising.com. :-)

Chemistry.com to Launch $40 Million Advertising Campaign

(Online Dating Industry Journal) Beginning on April 14, Chemistry.com will launch a new $40 million advertising campaign aimed at increasing its brand awareness as a all-inclusive online dating relationship service. This is according to an article in Brandweek. The article also mentions this interesting tidbit about online dating services seeing fewer visitors:

"MySpace and Facebook are to blame for the drop in visitors, said ComScore analyst Andrew Lipsman..."

Joe's Comments
The last major ad campaign that Chemistry.com did was attack ads against eHarmony. But for their efforts, eHarmony saw a growth in members.  However, eHarmony has been widely targeted for being so selective, therefore a campaign about being all-inclusive may be what Chemistry.com needs to improve its standing as an online relationship service.

A Look at Google Ad Manager

(Online Dating Industry Journal) This month Google put into beta a new tool for publishers to manage ad inventory. Called Google Ad Manager, the service helps publishers sell ads on their Websites.

Google Ad Manager is currently in beta with a small group of publishers that have little to no sales team, but enough inventory to be a valuable resource for direct advertisers or Google advertisers.

The way it works is that a Webmaster creates spots (or segments) for advertising on his/her Website.  The Webmaster then enters the dimensions of each space available (and where) into Google Ad Manager and instantly gets code to place on his/her site where the ads are located. You can then upload ads that advertisers bought directly from you or  participate in Google programs that serve ads. Either way, Google Ad Manager will help you organize your inventory while tracking results.

The best feature of Google Ad Manager is its cost - free.  Google is teaming up with its recently acquired DoubleClick crew in order to provide more ad opportunities to publishers with inventory. A Google Adsense feature is also built into the program so that you can deliver Adsense to fill any unused inventory that you have.

Google is continually expanding its base of publishers for the beta trial in anticipation of taking the program out of beta in the coming months.

Joe's Comments
This is great for people who run dating services or dating information sites and want a better way of controlling their inventory or better integration of Adsense with other advertisers. We'll likely ad promotion of this program to Online Dating Advertising when it comes out of beta. Online Dating Magazine has applied to be one of the next beta sites.  I'll keep you posted.
