(Online Dating Industry Journal) MySpace is an extremely popular social networking site that many 20 somethings turn to to meet new friends, social groups...and potential dates. Despite its large popularity among college students, there are still some out there that largely prefer more traditional dating than that found online through social networking and online dating sites.
Christy Castellanos, a theater arts major from San Diego State University, recently wrote an opinion piece for The Daily Aztec bashing sites like MySpace, Match, and American Singles for contributing to social isolation and the growth of more casual relationships over traditional dating methods. In her article she states:
"Internet Web site, www.myspace.com has damaged dating as we know it. "Friendship" sites such as this one have created a forum that has altered the way people communicate.
This statement may initially sound exaggerated, but consider the fact that it's essentially bizarre that people use this forum as a legitimate dating tool and resource. According to Fox News, 3 million new users sign up for the network every month, which creates the opportunity for meeting a slew of potential mates.
MySpace reinforces the fact that face-to-face contact has become a remnant of former generations, encouraging people to further isolate themselves from live contact. Are we nearing a time where dating will become obsolete, something our parents used to do "back in their day?""
Luckily for the creators of MySpace, Friendster, and major online dating sites, Castellanos opinion seems to be the minority, particularly when it comes to college-age singles. MySpace now has over 40 million members and is growing by leaps and bounds. To read Castellanos full article, click here.
