(Online Dating Industry Journal) According to Newsday.com, an Atlantic City gambler has come clean and admitted to scamming over 80 women out of their money over the phone and through online dating. The man, 41 year old Patrick M. Giblin, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of wire fraud, scamming women out of money that he gambled away at Atlantic City and Las Vegas casinos.
Giblin used several different online dating services to find his victims and, according to the article, "Giblin admitted he falsely told the women he was interested in beginning a romantic relationship, telling them he was about to relocate to their geographic area."
The man will be sentenced on August 18 with each wire fraud count carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
Kim's Comments:
It's amazing that this man was able to scam over 80 women before getting caught. Although rare, this is an unfortunate side effect of online dating, and daters always need to recognize the huge red flag that anyone asking for money throws in the air, especially when you have only communicated online and over the phone.
