(Online Dating Industry Journal) Smaller online dating services are starting to promote larger online dating services in order to increase revenue. A prime example of this is Date My Pet, a niche online dating service for pet owners. On the Date My Pet Website, there are banner ads on the right hand side that promote Perfect Match, Yahoo! Personals, and eHarmony. Each is linked through an affiliate program so that Date My Pet receives a portion of any memberships from people who become paying members after clicking on a banner ad.
Macy's made popular the concept of sending people to another store if they didn't have what the customer was looking for... only now people can make money from doing it.
Joe's Comments
Many online dating services struggle with a revenue model that is successful for them. On average, we see 2-3 new online dating services opening up every day and 99 percent of those online dating services will fail and never turn a profit. We have seen an evolution of revenue-making for online dating services. There is the "subscription model", "Google Adsense model" for free online dating services, and now the "recommend our online dating members to someone else and make money model".
I just launched a new site. The odds against success are daunting, but I've focused on the quality of the site first, the business model as a correlary to that. Please check it out...FlirtySomething.com! I think that singles are willing to pay a reasonable subscription rate to land on a site where they will find interesting ways to represent themselves and interact with others, and where they won't be bombarded with advertising. Would love to hear your feedback on the site!

I am an MBA student, currently working on my dissertation, my research is
Dissertation Title: UNDERSTANDING COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN THE ONLINE
DATING SERVICES
Project aims: The aim of this study is to examine the drivers of competitive
advantage within the online dating services. Specifically, the study is focusing
on how these services can be targeted towards the African community. The purpose
is to develop strategic competencies to reduce the negativity and stigma
attached to it while seeking to establish its market position
Project Outline: Online dating is new in the African community. In the past,
marriages were arranged by match making couples either by their parents or
family members. Africans therefore see online dating as alien to their culture
as it may encourage promiscuity or criminal intent. This is an erroneous notion
as most African especially those in the Diaspora are lonely due to their busy
schedules and do not have time to socialize.
