(Online Dating Industry Journal) A controversial, but profitable, online dating site for married people looking to cheat is using New York Governor Spitzer's fall from grace to gain valuable publicity. Ashley Madison, which brags about its members having affairs, took out a newspaper ad in New York that said if Governor Spitzer had used their service instead, he would have "never got caught". That's in reference to the recent downfall of New York Governor Spitzer who was caught, by Federal Agents, using an escort service. This week he announced his resignation from office, effective on Monday.
Text from the ad:
"Fooling around with 'professionals' is bound to get you into hot water... We hate to say we told you so. Approaching an affair the wrong way is always a recipe for disaster ... We're all of the fun and none of the trouble. ...No headlines, no scandals."
Joe's Comments
I am not a big fan of services that promote cheating and I personally find people that use such services disgusting, because of their choice to cheat. However, it's important to see how Ashely Madison has cleverly used a major news story to its advantage. By taking out the controversial ad, they have people talking. Even the New York Daily News wrote a story about the ad. In essence, Ashley Madison found a way to use a news story to further build its member base and profits. Actually, it's kind of funny because it seems like a strategy that could have been influenced by Herb Vest's "Instructions to My Officers" book (if you work in the online dating industry, you should read it).
The point is that if you run an online dating service, it's important to think outside of the box. View every situation you see, read, or hear about in a way that makes you ask, "is there any way we can benefit from this?"
