(Online Dating Industry Journal) An eMarketer UK Internet Users and Usage report states that, according to Match.com, 55% of its users in France are women. Match.com allows women to sign up for free in France. The revealing aspect of the report, though, is what happens in markets where Match.com charges both males and females. The report states that Match.com says that in most of its markets outside of France, the number of female users is only 40%. That's about in line with most online dating services who are searching for ways to increase the ratio of women to men.
Unlike France, Match.com can't allow women to sign up for free in the United States because of California's controversial gender equality laws. Companies have been sued for not setting the same price for women as men. Online dating services have been targeted too.
Another interest aspect of the report is that half of UK single men and women have said that they've used an online dating service. That number dwarfs the percentage of singles in the United States who have used an online dating service.
Joe's Comments
Getting a balanced male to female user ratio is one of the toughest jobs that online dating services have. The ratios are much closer with relationship services like eHarmony.com because relationship services generally use in-depth profiles that females mostly like filling out, but men find cumbersome.
