(Online Dating Industry Journal) SpeedDate.com, which offers online speed dating, has just surpassed its 1 millionth 3-minute speed date event.
"When we introduced traditional speed dating to cyberspace we knew it was a winning combination,“ says SpeedDate.com co-founder Dan Abelon. “Having hosted over one million dates so quickly demonstrates that singles recognize SpeedDate.com as a great new way to meet people online.”
SpeedDate.com has only been online since last October and already is averaging thousands of new users daily, according to Abelon. The growth of SpeedDate.com is attributed to word of mouth, marketing, a recently launched Facebook application, and venture capital funding from Menlo Ventures.
The way online speed dating works at SpeedDate.com is that users go on 3-minute speed dates with people in their area, using their Web cams and an instant messaging tool to communicate. Those who express an interest in each other are then matched and can communicate further with each other.

Congratulations to SpeedDate.com's team and progress. I noticed on their About page that they say they were the "first" online speed dating service. While that's not true, I would agree that they are the first "successful" online speed dating service to date. Of course, venture capital funding always helps!
