There's nothing really "official" about their announcement because for nearly three years now anyone could be a user and they were advertising to the public. They even got $5 million in venture capital funding two years ago. Back in February they also did a major event in the Bay Area to highlight their service. This is just a way for them to try and gain more publicity and there's definitely nothing wrong with that. Until this year, they had been rather quiet, then in the last three months, they really ramped up their advertising campaign and even launched an affiliate program, albeit a far cry from other online dating service affiliate programs.
In regards to Engage.com as a dating service, if you don't mind your dating life being an open book then it might be a great and fun dating social environment for you and your friends.
