(Online Dating Industry Journal) The NetChoice Coalition has sent a letter to the Florida House of Representatives, expressing their opposition to Florida Bill HB 411 - the "Internet Predator Awareness and Online Safety Act". The bill requires online dating services to either do background checks or post in various fashions specific verbiage about not doing checks.
Online Dating Magazine has published an article about the bill and a copy of the letter sent to the Florida House of Representatives.
From the letter, which was written by NetChoice Executive Director Steve DelBianco:
"HB 411 would lock into Florida law a formal definition for “Criminal background screening”. Yet, the definition in HB 411 would have the state set a standard that is rendered entirely ineffective when a convicted sex offender registers with a name that’s different from the name under which they were previously convicted."

I am not against online dating background checks, but I am against the way True.com is trying to shape legislation for the checks. Once you've read Herb Vest's book, "Instructions to my Officers," it gives you a whole different perspective on what they are doing.
Furthermore, I think it's about time True.com stopped lying by telling the media that they are the only online dating service in the industry that does background checks. Has True.com ever heard of Great Expectations or HonestyFirst? In fact, Great Expectations also requires a face to face meeting to verify identity before the person can join their online dating service. Perhaps True.com can make their service and site safer by doing the same!
